Behavior
Often times students display behavior difficulties that need some attention.  Depending on age, students would benefit from individual or group counseling.  Anything that can be done visually usually helps.  For students that need certain behaviors targeted, try a behavior plan (see sample plans below). These can be laminated and put on the desk or printed off and sent home each day.  For students that show constant hand movement and a stress ball would be too distracting, try putting velcro underneath their desk.  This allows the student to have a place to put their hands when experiencing difficulties.  (This is great for your kids who have sensory difficulties).  Also frequent breaks have been proven successful.  Allow the student to walk to the office or another teacher's classroom.  Sometimes taking a break from work can help.  One other idea is the use of social stories.  This has proven extremely effective.  Usually the teacher or counselor has a social story for the student, where they read it together and the student gets to illustrate each page.  When the teacher sees the student showing an inappropriate beahvior the teacher directs the student to "read their story".  This reminds the student of the appropriate behavior (see example below).
